I watched a documentary recently on the writer J.D. Salinger, entitled simply, Salinger. There were remembrances by people who knew him and a discussion of his work, his life, and ultimately how he became a recluse until his death.

There was one scene in a bar was where he used to meet and hang out with other writers, most of them struggling to make a go of it. Boy, do I know what that’s like. They would meet together and talk shop over beer and whiskey. Many of those writers dreamed of being the next Hemingway, but not Salinger. Salinger never wanted to be Hemingway because he thought he was better than Hemingway and come to think of it, maybe he was.
